چکیده

Central venous pressure (CVP) monitor. ing is a useful tool in the anesthetic management of the seriously ill patient for both emergency and elective procedures. A working knowledge of anatomy, various techniques, and the proper indication for CVP must be foremost in the anesthetist's mind. There are a number of techniques used in the placement of the CVP catheter. The purpose of this article is to review these areas, with emphasis on placement in the internal jugular vein (IJV), elaborating on technique, advantages and disadvantages. The indications for the insertion and monitoring of the central venous pressure (CVP) are as follows: (1) patients undergoing surgery in which a major volume shift may occur (such as in the Whipple procedure) ; (2) operations where the potential for hypovolemia exists (such as in a bowel resection); (3) patients in shock (such as in trauma) ; (4) operations performed with the patient in the sitting position with risk of air embolization; and (5) some selected patients with congestive heart failure. A Swan-Ganz catheter rather than a CVP catheter probably would be placed for assessment of left heart filling pressures in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction.

A comparison of external and internal jugular venous pressures to monitor pulmonary artery pressure after superior cavopulmonary anastomosis.

The internal jugular vein continues to be the preferred site for cannulation to monitor central venous pressure despite the reported evidence of the accuracy of external jugular venous pressure (EJVP) to reliably predict internal jugular venous pressure (IJVP). Internal jugular venous cannulation carries a risk of thrombosis that can be life-threatening in children undergoing superior cavopulmo...

A complication of percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein.

Reviews of the use of the technique of percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein for central venous pressure monitoring have indicated that it is free from serious complications. A patient is reported here in whom the ascending cervical artery was damaged during attempted cannulation of the internal jugular vein prior to aortic valve replacement. Haemorrhage from this site after the...

Factors Predictive of Right Internal Jugular Vein Cross-Sectional Area Change in Response to Trendelenburg Positioning

Background/Purpose: The right internal jugular vein (RIJV) is the most commonly accessed central venous site in the cardiac operating room. The Trendelenburg position is frequently used to increase the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the RIJV to facilitate its cannulation. However, the extent of change of RIJV CSA in response to Trendelenburg positioning in anesthetized patients and its predictiv...

[Percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein].

Two simple techniques for central venous cannulation by percutaneous puncture of the right internal jugular vein are described. They have been employed routinely for the last six months in all patients requiring central venous cannulation. No serious complications or difficulties have been encountered in a series of two hundred cases. The method allows free movement of the limbs postoperatively...

Central venous catheter malposition due to dialysis catheter: a case report

A 56-year-old man on maintenance hemodialysis was admitted to the intensive care unit with septic shock and coagulopathy. As there was a dialysis catheter in the right internal jugular vein, the left internal jugular vein was cannulated with a central venous catheter to initiate vasopressor therapy. A chest X-ray showed formation of a catheter loop inside the left brachiocephalic vein, probably...
